To give researchers context to Mikiso Hane’s life, it would be important to detail that he lived in both California and Japan, but put more emphasis on his later years because from what I’ve seen there isn’t much about his life as a kid or his family. I think some important information for the biography should include his time in the internment camp; there is a document in the faculty series I believe that is his official record from the internment camp online records that can help us. At the same time, Hane shouldn’t be defined by that experience and the balance of acknowledging that part of his life and the impact he made during the rest of his life can be handled by the amount we write about it. This journey from the camps to Yale and eventually Knox is also important. Because Hane is a scholar, his academic journey is probably something that is a pretty important aspect– I personally haven’t seen anything from his other schools, so the emphasis should be primarily on Knox. Continuing this theme, it’s probably also pretty important to talk about the impact that he made on his field by writing about the works that he wrote/contributed to.

This makes a lot of sense! I agree that striking a balance between including information on his internment without making that the defining aspect of his biography, with more focus on his academic career, is a good goal for the bibliography. We’ll have to discuss how we want to make sure we do that!
