The box that I opened was box #1 which contained a collection from Edgars Early Years (1857-1883) and Middle Years (1884-1924). The early years contained: a coat of arms colored drawing, line drawings, letters, tickets, invitations, and news clippings. The line drawings were impressive. I can say that Edgar was quite artistic. One of the drawings was of an African American man with exaggerated features, which shocked me at first. After checking the time period, I concluded that it is more telling of society as a whole rather than of Edgar himself. The coat of arms could maybe tell us something of Edgar if it were related to some grand house that traces back to medieval times. Most likely, it was drawn for entertainment such as I remember doing at a young age when my school tasked my class with looking up your surnames coat of arms. It would be curious looking up your coat of arms is an activity that was passed down through the generations. Anyway, I did not look through many letters. Most of them were illegible to me because of the handwriting of the time. Cursive of the past is its own monster… It’s no wonder we transitioned to using emojis. Something that will be interesting for historians of the future to interpret. The tickets and invitations were interesting to read. Edgar won 1st place in a contest; I don’t remember what it was, but it appeared significant. Knowing what Edgar attending and when can help decipher Edgars priorities in life. What he spent most of his time doing and why. Anything that helps personify the subject of study should be considered important, in my opinion.

I think one of the challenges of those images too is that they were placed in that folder without context. Why draw them, why keep them, what did they mean to him? Hard to tell on their own. You definitely got a box that could tell us more about him as a person than some of the ambassador boxes for example–information that I agree is very important even if you’re only interested his life as an ambassador.
